Happy Hands offers an integrated curriculum. We have taken what we believe to be the best of different teaching methodologies and melded them into our comprehensive learning program. Recognizing that each child learns differently, our curriculum offers flexibility to adapt to our students.
When Bessie Cluts started Happy Hands back in 1968, she embraced a curriculum developed by Kathleen and Anthony J. Coletta, PhD. This curriculum takes a multi-sensory approach to learning and is the core of our teaching today. Monthly themes and sub-themes are based on seasonal interest, start with areas of familiarity, and provide opportunities to expand into new learning.
Each teacher brings a wealth of ideas and experiences to our school. We have also consulted with the local grade schools to ensure that Happy Hands children are academically prepared to enter kindergarten. We help students develop a good self-image and a feeling that they are a positive piece of the community at large.
Every class, regardless of age, is exposed to developmentally appropriate curriculum in language arts, science, dramatic play, social studies, art, math, music and movement. Children are given opportunities to indulge their creativity, improve their fine motor skills and advance academically. We recognize the importance of life skills (taking responsibility, cleaning up, dressing and taking care of their things) and social skills (cooperation, sharing, listening, following directions and displaying Christian values).
Happy Hands’ teachers are adaptable, caring and child-focused; treating each child as an individual and helping them progress at their own pace. Our goal is to instill a love of learning, allowing children to experience their own stages of development and helping them feel success without pressure to perform to standards.
